Things I Learn from Girlboss on Netflix

February 12, 2023

Not sure if this is a common problem but I always take around 30 minutes browsing movies or series on Netflix. Sometime, I end up watching nothing and just move to my phone and watch Tiktok before sleep.
Recently, I finished a series called 'GIRLBOSS'. I read the book but I did not finish it. I knew it's about Nasty Gal - a fashion company which was so trending back then when the fashion e-commerce was barely even started.

I found the story was interesting. The storyline was not that complicated and realistic enough but I somehow could not feel a connection with Sophia in the series like she has a completely different characteristic than mine. However, I managed to finish the series even though for some scenes I watched it with 1.5x speed.

For those of you who have not watched the series, it is all about an ordinary girl in her search of what she wanted to do in life. In a big picture, she knew she wanted to pursue something in fashion but didn't know where to start until things started happening here and there which brought her to a point where she finally made a decision to finally pursue her dream.

I love the story as it was based on a true story and there seem realistic - well at least to me. As I watched the series, it made me realise a few points and life lessons that somehow 'remind' me about the journey of pursuing our dream.

DISCLAIMER: This contains spoilers.

#1 Emotional Baggage

Sophia had a huge ambition and confidence that she was going to 'disrupt' the fashion market and be the biggest vintage shop online. Having a huge ambition and confidence is great and even it is necessary to start a business. However, it seemed to me she had a lot of unpacked emotional baggage and that made her to get easily triggered or angry.

Every time something happened not in a way she expected, she would lost her temper.

However, in the series we could also see that she was not afraid to confront anything that made her feel uncomfortable. I mean, she was not that type of person who liked avoiding conflicts - which is a good thing as it helped her to unpack all the emotions in her suitcase. And as the story expanded and continued, she became calmer, slightly.

#2 Kindness Wins

Although she confronted so many people with her eccentric personality, Sophia always ended up either apologising or being friends with them. She was not that type of person that held grudges. Only people with good heart that would able to do this for sure. Therefore, not a surprise that she could keep and maintain her supportive friends around her - of course, after all of the dramas.

This was because she was courage enough (and not being naive) to accept that she needed others!

#3 The Boyfriend

It is interesting to me that Sophia, considering her rebel characteristic, never cheated her boyfriend. At the beginning I was like, "Oh, wow, Sophia was so lucky to have met this one calm boyfriend." It ALMOST made me believe that our true soulmate would have difference characteristic from us so that we could complement each other. But. But. Wait a minute, sister. Life is not that easy and predictable.

Sophia caught her boyfriend was cheating with his bandmate who was younger than her.

She was so in dilemma as to whether or not to break up with him as she had been too in love with him after all this time. In the scene where she finally came to his boyfriend's place to talk, I could feel that she had become so much calmer and did not let her anger take issue.

This is why choosing the one who has the same vision and purpose with you is very crucial in a relationship, especially when we are trying to focus on our self growth.

#4 Success is Nothing Without Someone You Love to Share It With

The story was ended with Sophia successfully launched her website and sold all of her items. However, during the launching celebration where she was supposed to be in her celebratory mood as she had gone this far to be there, she just could not hide her sadness on that day. It's more likely that her personal life weighted on her mind.

This scene actually hit me a lot. We all want to reach that peak of success. Sometimes we forget that on the journey to reach that peak, we might have to lose something that might not mean to be for us. And, at the end of the day, we have to choose our self. Being successful does not guarantee happiness. This is why we need to always re-evaluate our ambition so that we won't take things for granted.

#5 Ethical

The Nasty Gal was able to become the fastest growing online fashion retailer because it was built from a true passion. Nevertheless, a mere passion was not enough to sustain it. It has a lot more than, of course. The Nasty Gal filed for bankruptcy in 2016 and was purchased by a British fashion only retailer. It is still present on social media but unfortunately, we could see more complaining customers than satisfied customers.

In the series, there was one episode that talked about whether or not Nasty Gal was being ethical. Knowing all the characters that Sophie was showing in the series, where she tended to just do things as she wanted, I tended to believe an article that mentioned about mismanagement. Ethical is about doing things accordance to rules / morally right.

We do not need to own a business or work in a company to be a boss. We are a boss of our own life. We have become a boss the day we decide to really pursue our dream. We manage and plan all the strategy and preparation to get that dream alive. We are THE boss!

Overall, it is a limited series which is fun to watch. It really shows the struggle of a passionate person who started from nothing and made her dream into reality, with all the dramas in between.
